Woman in hospital after being raped by three men in Sydney
A Sydney woman has been taken to hospital after she was raped by a group of men outside her house in the early hours of Wednesday.
Police said the woman was rushed to the Royal Alexandra Hospital after a woman in her 20s reported she was being attacked by three masked men outside a house in Kensington.
Police are investigating the incident.
Police Commissioner Catherine Burn told reporters that police are treating the incident as “unexplained but possibly gang related”.
She said there is no evidence of a gang ring.
“There is no indication of a specific gang or group involved,” Commissioner Burn said.
Police believe the victim was not the intended target of the attack.
The woman was taken to the hospital after reporting the attack, and her condition was upgraded to stable.
The man who attacked her has been described as between 15 to 20 years old, and around 5ft 11in tall.
He is believed to have had short hair and was wearing a grey hooded top.
He has a scar on his face and police are urging anyone with information about the attack to come forward.
He was wearing dark pants and a grey T-shirt.
The victim’s brother told News Corp Australia that the attack occurred on Tuesday morning.
He said the victim and her brother were walking through the neighbourhood and saw a group walking through and the woman approached them.
The brother said the men shouted at the woman to get away from them and she responded by asking them where they were going.
“The woman said they were robbing her, and they grabbed her by the hair,” he said.
“She said she was scared, she couldn’t do anything.”
The brother then said the man punched the woman in the face, causing her to fall backwards onto the ground.
He added the man tried to run away, but he was tackled by the woman, who was lying on the ground in the street.
The mother of the victim said she had not seen her sister for about six weeks.
Police have not released a description of the man who assaulted the woman.
She told News Radio 702 the woman had told her she had been sexually assaulted by three people.
“I told her to tell her parents she was just a victim of a crime and I hope they help her out,” she said.
She said the family had spoken to police about the incident and there was no suggestion the woman knew the men.
Ms Burn said the attack had taken place outside the woman’s home, but did not specify whether the man was responsible.
“It is a gang-related crime,” she told reporters.
The Metropolitan Police said it was assisting the woman and her family.
“A significant number of our resources are focused on this matter and we are making every effort to identify and bring to justice those responsible for this assault,” the statement read.
It also urged anyone who witnessed the attack or has any information about it to contact Crime Stoppers.
The case is expected to be reported to the AFP.
